“Domestic player of the year”

In the 2008/09 seaso, Vincent Polakovic from Inter Bratislava was able to capture several personal awards.

According to “Eurobasket.com” and “Ebasket.sk”, Polakovic who became the topscorer of the league was named Domestic Player of the Year. In addition to this recognition he was nominted into the First All Star Team and also Domestic All Star Team.

“Topscorer of the league: Vincent Polakovic” 

After the 32nd round Vincent Polakovic from Inter Bratislava remains the top scorer of the Slovak Extra league scoring the total of 736 points (23.0 ppg average). He is also the leader in free throws made with 219 (77.2 %) and field goals made with 219 (63.4 %).

Vincent Polakovic scored 20 or more points in 23 out of 32 Extra league games.

“Polakovic 2nd in the MVP race in March” 

The power forward of Inter Bratislava Vincent Polakovic became co runner for the MVP award in the month of March. Polakovic was just 2 points behind the leader of the month Eugene Lawrence of Nitra. Polakovic was already player of the month in October and February.

In six games played in march the 205 cm power forward averaged impressive 26,8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists a game.

“Player of the month February: Polakovic” 

The power forward from Inter Bratislava Vincent Polakovic became the most valuable player (MVP) for the month of February in the slovak extraleague. The 25 year old newcomer repeated his honor from October. He was followed by american guard Lorenzo Williams from Pezinok. 

During the month of February Polakovic averaged 22,4 points, 5 rebounds and 1,8 assists a game. Except for one game Polakovic was able to score 20 or more points in every contest.

“Polakovic shined in the All Star game”

Team East won first Slovakian All Star game after five years as they defeated Team West with the score 134-127.

In this exhibition game Vincent Polakovic recorded 10 points along with 5 rebounds in just 18 minutes of play. Along with spectacular plays throughout the game he became the finalist of the slam dunk contest as the part of the halftime activities.

Vincent Polakovic about the All Star game (Team West): I’m really happy that this type of event was organized after such a long break. I appreciate that many people came to see us in action. I think we were able to offer them interesting show so I hope they left satisfied. I hope this type of events will take place in the future because it is a nice advertisement for Slovak basketball.

“MVP after the first half of the regular season”

Vincent Polakovic from Inter Bratislava became the most valuable player (MVP) in the first part of the regular season play in slovak extraleague, followed by american guard Eugene Lawrence from Nitra. Similar than in the MVP race, Polakovic also dominated the leading scorers race with 25,8 points per game.

“Player of the month October: Polakovic” 

The power forward from Inter Bratislava Vincent Polakovic became the most valuable player (MVP) for the month of October in the slovak extraleague. 24 year old 204 cm former player of Svit, who played last season at the University of San Francisco averaged 27,1 points and 6 rebounds in 7 games played.

Polakovic was able to score more than 20 points in five games played. His best game was against MBK Handlova (98:91), when he shined with 50 points and 10 rebounds.

2007/ 08 Season 

Senior forward Vince Polakovic made the most of his delayed 2008 debut, scoring 18 points with six rebounds against Gonzaga (2/16/08). Polakovic poured in 20 points in a 73-60 win against Portland (2/18/08), registered 23 in a win against Loyola Marymount (3/1/08) and poured in a career-high 24 against Pepperdine (3/3/08). In seven games back, Polakovic averaged 17.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

SUTTON’S INFLUENCE: Vince Polakovic’s friends back home in Slovakia constantly ask what it’s like to be coached by a legend like Eddie Sutton. Polakovic cherished every minute of the rare opportunity after Sutton took over as interim head coach at San Francisco on Dec. 26, replacing Jessie Evans and going on to earn his 800th career victory.

Polakovic, a senior forward and the team’s second-leading scorer, missed the first 24 games of the season because of a suspension by the NCAA for circumstances stemming from his participation with a German national team in 2004.

USF said that several members from the German national team received stipends deemed by the NCAA “above actual and necessary expenses.” San Francisco unsuccessfully appealed, contending Polakovic wasn’t among those players who received payments. Polakovic still learned plenty from Sutton upon his return even if their time together was even shorter than the rest of the Dons.

“Not many European players are able to be coached by a legend like this,” Polakovic said after his final home game at Memorial Gym on Monday night, an 88-63 victory over Pepperdine. “People back home were asking me what it was like to be coached by him. It’s great that I had this chance, though I’m sad it was for such a short time.”

Sutton pointed to the improvements by his two seniors: Polakovic and Danny Cavic. Sutton, too, wishes he had been able to coach Polakovic for a longer period, knowing USF also would have won more games.

“The NCAA has its reasons, but in my opinion it was a great injustice,” Sutton said of the suspension.
